LIFE
It was just before the Passover Feast, Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father.  Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love an the life they should live.
JESUS
I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.
JOHN
As the LIFE, he joins his divine life to ours, both now and eternally.  This Life comes through the Holy Spirit from Jesus as he breaths on us:
JESUS
Receive the Holy Spirit.
JOHN
There is life in the breath of God.  Man was created but did not come alive until God breathed into him the breath of life.  God’s first breath made man different from all other forms of creation.  Now, through the breath of Jesus, God imparted eternal, spiritual life.  With this inbreathing came the power to do God’s will on earth.  Jesus put it this way:
JESUS
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.
JOHN
God is the source and Creator of Life, for there is no life apart from God, here or hereafter.  The life in us is a gift from him.  Because Jesus is eternally existent with God, the Creator, he too is “the life” through whom we may live eternally. Jesus added:
JESUS
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
MATTHEW
Clinging to this life may cause us to forfeit the best from Christ in THIS world and in the next.  The more we love this life’s rewards (leisure, power, popularity, financial security), the more we will discover how empty they really are.  The best way to enjoy life, therefore, is to loosen our greedy grasp on earthly rewards so that we can be free to follow Christ.  In doing so, we will inherit eternal life and begin at once to experience the benefits of following Christ.  Jesus warned us why our lives must be filled with God:
JESUS
When ab evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.  Then it says, “I will return to the house I left.”  When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order.  Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there.  And the final condition of that man is worse than the first.  That is how it will be with this wicked generation.
MATTHEW
Just cleaning up one’s life without filling it with God leaves plenty of room for Satan to enter.  The book of Ezra records how the people rid themselves of idolatry, but failed to replace it with Love for God and Obedience to him.  Ridding our lives of sin is the first step.  We must also take the second step; filling our lives with God’s Word and the Holy Spirit.  Unfilled and complacent people are easy targets for Satan.

People are concerned about prolonging their lives on earth, but do not work even harder to secure their eternal lives, which is even more valuable and thereby demands more work.  People may seek Jesus to learn valuable lessons from his life or in hopes of finding relief from pain.  But we miss Jesus’ whole message if we seek him only to heal our earthly life but not our eternal life and his eternal plan for us.  Only when we understand Jesus Christ’s real message can we appreciate how he can truly change our lives.  Remember Jesus said:
JESUS
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.  What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?
ANDREW
If this present life is most important to you, you will do everything you can to protect it.  You will not want to do anything that might endanger your safety, health, or comfort.  By contrast, if following Jesus is most important, you may find yourself in unsafe, unhealthy, and uncomfortable places.  You will risk death, but you will not fear it because you know that Jesus will raise you to eternal life.  Jesus’ disciples are not to use their lives on earth for their own pleasure – they should spend their lives serving God and people.
MATTHEW
Jesus put great value on each human life.  As Jesus put it again:
JESUS
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.
PETER
We should be willing to lose our lives for the sake of the gospel, not because our lives are useless but because nothing – not even life itself – can compare to what we gain with Christ.  Jesus wants us to CHOOSE to follow him rather than to lead a life of sin and self-satisfaction.  He wants us to stop TRYING to control our own destiny and to let him direct us.  This makes good sense because, as the Creator, Christ knows better than we do what real life is about.  He asks for submission, not self-hatred; he asks us only to lose our self-centered determination to be in charge.  As Jesus put it:
JESUS
What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?  Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
PETER
Many people spend all their energy seeking pleasure.  Jesus said, however, that a world of pleasure centered on possessions, position, or power is ultimately worthless.  Whatever you have on earth is only temporary; it cannot be exchanged for your soul.  If you work hard at getting what you want, you might eventually have a “pleasurable” life, but in the end you will find it hollow and empty.  Are we willing to make the pursuit of God more important than the selfish pursuit of pleasure? If we follow Jesus now, we will know what it means to live abundantly now and to have eternal life as well.  Remember John what you said about this?
JOHN
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

All who welcome Jesus Christ as LORD of their lives are reborn spiritually, receiving new life from God.  Through faith in Christ, this new birth changes us from the inside out – rearranging our attitudes, desires, and motives.  Being born makes you physically alive and places you in your parents’ family.  Being born of God makes you spiritually alive and puts you in God’s family.  This fresh start in life is available to all who believe in Christ as their Savior AND LORD.  Jesus put it this way:
JESUS
Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.  Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
JOHN
As our bodies hunger and thirst, so do our souls.  But our souls need spiritual food and water.  We would not think of depriving our bodies of food and water when they hunger or thirst.  Why then should we deprive our souls?  The Living Lord, Jesus Christ, and the written Word, the Bible, can satisfy our hungry and thirsty souls and thereby provide a spring of water satisfying our earthly life and thereby, “welling up to eternal life.
