EVANGELISM

The Great Commission

EVANGELISM

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had
told them to go. When they saw Jesus, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then
Jesus came to them and said,

JESUS All authority in heaven and on earth has been
given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them
to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the
very end of the age.

MATHEW So Jesus, you are commanding us to tell others the
Good News and make them disciples for the kingdom.

Also that we are under your authority; that we are to make more disciples; that
we are to baptize and teach these new disciples to obey you; and that you will
be with them always. Our mission from now on will be worldwide. Jesus, you are
Lord of the whole earth, and you died for the sins of all people from all
nations.

We are to go – whether it is next door or to another country – and make
disciples. It is not an option, but a command to all who call you “Lord.” We are
not all evangelists in the formal sense, but we have all received gifts that we
can use to help fulfill the Great Commission. As we obey, we have comfort in the
knowledge that you are always with us.

JESUS The harvest is plentiful but the
workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers
into his harvest field.”

MATHEW Many people are ready to give their lives to you
if someone would show them how. Jesus, you command us to pray that people will
respond to this need for workers. Often, when we pray for something, God answers
our prayers by using us. We need to be prepared for God to use us to show
another person the way to him. I remember when you said:

JESUS Still other seed
fell on good soil, where it produced a crop.

MATHEW This should encourage us to
be spiritual “sowers” – those who teach, preach, and lead others. The farmer
sowed good seed, but not all the seed sprouted, and even the plants that grew
had varying yields. We should not be discouraged if we do not always see results
as we faithfully reach out with the Word. Belief cannot be forced to follow a
mathematical formula. Rather, it is a miracle of God’s Holy Spirit as he uses
our words to lead others to him. You went on to explain,

JESUS But the one who
received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and
understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times
what was sown.

MATHEW People respond differently because they are in different
states of readiness. Some are hardened, others are shallow, others are
contaminated by distracting worries, and some are receptive. JESUS Again I say
to you, The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the
harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. ANDREW In
Christian service, there is no unemployment. God has work enough for everyone.
We can’t just sit back and watch others work – we must look for ways to help
with the harvest.

Some people, as soon as they understand the gospel, want to go to work
immediately contacting unsaved people. We need to begin by mobilizing people to
pray. And before we pray for unsaved people, we should pray that other concerned
disciples will join us in reaching out to them.

JESUS I tell you, whoever
acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the
angels of God. But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the
angels of God.

ANDREW We disown you, Jesus, when we (1) hope no one will think
we are Christians, (2) decide NOT to speak up for what is right, (3) are silent
about our relationship with God, (4) blend into society, (5) accept our
culture’s non-Christian values. By contrast, we acknowledge him when we (1) live
moral, upright, Christ-honoring lives, (2) look for opportunities to share our
faith with others, (3) help others in need, (4) take a stand for justice, (5)
love others, (6) acknowledge our loyalty to Christ, (7) use our lives and
resources to carry out his desires rather than our own.

JOHN It take time to
accept something that changes the very foundations of your life. Sharing the
gospel will not always have immediate results. We must give them time to weigh
the matter.
